Where does the amount come from?
From the till, never the kiosk: the bill is worked out as the till prints it (offers, tax, surcharges), and that is what the terminal asks for.
If it goes wrong
"Card payment isn't working right now"
The kiosk's terminal isn't answering, or no till is online to make the bill. The guest pays at the counter. Check the terminal's Wi-Fi or SIM under Card payments.
